2024 BMW X1: Article Rewrite

BMW X1 2024: Although positioned at the base of BMW’s SUV lineup, the 2024 X1 is far from being an entry-level vehicle. Its agile handling and practical interior make it a viable substitute for the 3-series station wagon, which is unfortunately missing from BMW‘s U.S.

lineup. The standard powertrain is a 241-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the sportier M35i trim offers a 312-horsepower variant; both models come with standard all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission.

The cabin showcases a modern design and state-of-the-art technology, including BMW‘s latest iDrive 9 infotainment system, a curved-glass display, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

There are two rows of seats, which are spacious for a small SUV, though the Mercedes-Benz GLB-class offers more room and an optional third row. However, the GLB doesn’t match the driving excitement of the X1, which is why the X1 is featured on our 2024 Editors’ Choice list.

2024 BMW X1: What’s New for 2024?

For 2024, a lively M35i xDrive model joins the X1 lineup, equipped with a 312-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, adaptive suspension, and high-performance brakes. Unique 19-inch wheels with all-season tires are standard on the M35i, with 20-inch wheels and summer tires available as an option.

The exterior of the M35i sports a more aggressive look, with a redesigned grille, larger air inlets, quad tailpipes, and black exterior trim. Inside, the M35i features sport front seats, faux-suede interior trim, and an M-branded steering wheel. BMW’s updated iDrive 9 infotainment software debuts on the X1, offering improvements to the system’s menu structure for easier navigation.

2024 BMW X1: Pricing and Best Trim to Buy

The 2024 BMW X1 starts at $41,495 and goes up to $50,895 depending on the trim and options. We recommend opting for the new M35i model to unlock the X1’s full performance potential. For those willing to splurge, the optional Premium package adds features like a head-up display, navigation, panoramic sunroof, and a 360-degree camera system.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The entry-level xDrive28i models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 241 horsepower. All-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission are standard. The X1 xDrive28i accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds in our tests.

Real-world acceleration may feel slower due to turbo lag, but the X1’s sporty suspension is fun on winding roads. The optional M Sport package adds adaptive suspension and shift paddles.

The M35i is the highest-performance version, boasting a 312-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, adaptive suspension, and upgraded brakes. BMW claims 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds, but we expect it to be quicker in real-world testing. We will update this story once we have tested it.2024 BMW X1: Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates the X1 xDrive28i will achieve 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Fuel economy estimates for the M35i model are not yet available. We’ll update with real-world fuel economy results after testing the X1 on our 75-mph highway route. For more details on the X1’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The latest iDrive 9 infotainment system is integrated into BMW’s smallest SUV. The X1’s sleek digital dashboard, like the iX and 7-series, serves as both gauge display and infotainment screen. Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The optional wireless charging pad and Premium package add a head-up display, Harman/Kardon stereo, and a 360-degree camera system.
