Toyota GR86 Sports Sales Hit Historic High in U.S.
Toyota announced a very huge increase in sales of its sports cars in its largest market in the United States during the month of May, especially the GR86, which recorded the best American monthly sales in its history with 1,981 copies, an increase of 104.4% compared to sales in May 2023.
Moreover, the 2024 Toyota Supra witnessed an increase in sales during the same month by 78.1% compared to May of last year, as 406 new Supra cars were delivered to customers in the American market during the past month. This bodes well for the sales of small rear-wheel drive sports cars from the Japanese brand.
It’s great to hear this news because sales of both models; The 2024 Toyota Supra and 2024 Toyota GR86 have been declining recently, with the Supra selling very poorly, falling to a low of just 85 new cars sold across America in October of last year. While the summer months are always a great time for sports car sales, it’s interesting that sales jumped so much given there were no major changes to either model.
Excellent sales for the Toyota GR86 Sports Supra in the American market
Toyota Supra sales also witnessed a significant increase of 78.1% during May 2024 compared to the same month last year, reaching 406 copies in the American market, which is good news and indicates that the category of small sports cars with two doors and rear-wheel drive systems continues to maintain its popular base.
As for competing cars, such as the Mazda Miata MX-5, its American sales also rose by 12.3% during May 2024 to 1,090 cars, which is an excellent improvement for a car whose current generation was launched about 10 years ago.
Nissan has not yet revealed sales of the Z Sport model in May, but we know that sales of the sports car jumped by 43.5% during the month of April compared to the same period last year.
A surprising exception is the Subaru BRZ. Toyota GR86 Sports
The main exception here for Japanese sports car sales is the Subaru BRZ, which shares the same engine, technology and mechanical components with the Toyota GR86, but its sales declined by 64.4% during May 2024 to only 227 copies in the US market.
