The BMW 8-series embodies the essence of two-door grand touring cars of the 2020s: spacious on the outside with sweeping, aggressive lines, but snug for rear-seat passengers. It offers first-class, high-speed ground transportation for two, competing with models like the Mercedes-AMG SL-class and the Lexus LC. Available as both a coupe and convertible, the 8-series is powered by either a robust turbocharged inline-six or an optional twin-turbo V-8.

The interior is meticulously designed with high-quality materials, reflecting its near six-figure starting price. Both the coupe and convertible versions deliver a sporty ride, with plenty of driving excitement in the more aggressive drive modes. For those seeking ultimate performance, the high-performance M8 (reviewed separately) is ideal for high-speed adventures and back-road thrills. BMW also offers a four-door version called the Gran Coupe (also reviewed separately), which provides a similar driving experience with additional rear-seat passenger space and a larger trunk.

Pricing and Features of the 2025 BMW 8 Series

The 2025 BMW 8-series starts at $91,975 and can reach up to $117,175, depending on the chosen trim and options.

We favor the impressive power of the all-wheel-drive-only M850i, equipped with a 523-hp twin-turbo V-8. We also appreciate the regal and immersive experience of the droptop version, despite its nearly $10K premium. The 8-series cabin is lavishly adorned with attractive accents and leather on almost every surface, customizable to each owner’s aesthetic preferences. We particularly love the Cognac Merino leather paired with Aluminum Dark Trace interior trim. Among our top options are the glass controls for an even more luxurious interior and the neck warmers in the front-seat headrests, which enhance top-down driving comfort in all seasons.

Performance and Handling Details of the 2025 BMW 8 Series

The largest of BMW‘s coupes and convertibles begins with a 335-hp turbocharged inline-six engine. The 840i models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission and offer either rear- or all-wheel drive (known as xDrive in BMW terminology). Although we haven’t driven an 8-series coupe or convertible with the turbocharged inline-six, we have tested an 8-series Gran Coupe with this engine and found it to be quick (60 mph in 4.7 seconds) and in line with BMW’s reputation for smooth and responsive six-cylinder engines.

Speed enthusiasts will likely prefer the M850i, powered by a 523-hp twin-turbo V-8, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive. This setup delivers impressive acceleration for the car’s size—achieving 60 mph in 3.5 seconds in our tests—and produces a rich sound in the sportiest driving mode. The transmission adapts from relaxed to responsive based on the driver’s input. Most importantly, the 8-series fulfills its grand-touring promise with a supremely quiet ride and surprising agility. Its steering is direct and linear, filtering out road imperfections and front-tire feedback. The adaptive dampers offer extra flexibility depending on the selected drive mode, and in their stiffest setting, they provide remarkable stability during cornering. The car’s powerful brakes further enhance driving confidence.

Fuel Economy Performance of the 2025 BMW 8 Series

The M850i is rated by the EPA for up to 17 mpg city and 25 highway, while the less powerful 840i has estimates of up to 23 mpg city and 30 highway. In our tests on a 75-mph fuel-economy route, the M850i coupe and convertible achieved 29 and 26 mpg, respectively. Both body styles exceeded their EPA ratings, with the coupe surpassing it by 4 mpg and the convertible by 1 mpg. For more details on the 8-series’ fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The 2025 BMW 8-series interior boasts all the luxury features and advanced infotainment expected in a high-end grand tourer. Each model comes equipped with 14-way power-adjustable heated front seats, soft-close automatic doors, and customizable ambient lighting. Extravagant options include glass knobs and switches and additional premium materials. The 8-series can also be personalized with BMW Individual options, like a sophisticated white-and-brown color scheme.

While BMW does provide rear seats, they are not comfortable for adults. The low roofline also limits headroom in the front and impedes outward visibility, a trade-off for its stylish design. Interior storage includes a covered tray at the front of the center console, a central bin, and door pockets. The coupe’s trunk can accommodate five carry-on bags, with space for six more when the back seats are folded, whereas the convertible holds one bag less in each scenario.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every 8-series model features a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen. The steering wheel controls, however, are not very intuitive. The infotainment system offers multiple interaction methods, including a rotary knob on the center console. Standard features include Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot—though Android Auto is not available. For those seeking an enhanced audio experience, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround system is an option.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2025 8-series comes with a suite of driver-assistance technologies, including a semi-autonomous driving mode. For detailed crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Available adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology
  • Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

BMW provides a competitive limited warranty for the 8-series, though it has a different advantage compared to its Lexus competitor. While the Lexus LC offers an extra two years or 20,000 miles of powertrain coverage, the 8-series includes an additional two years or 26,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for three years or 36,000 miles
